Peter Anton is a contemporary American artist known for his oversized, lushly detailed, and subtly unsettling sculptures of sweets, pastries, vegetables, and meat. Like Claes Oldenberg, Anton plays with scale; blowing up donuts, lollipops, boxes of chocolate, and banana splits into absurdly large proportions. Concerned with craft as much as concept, Anton carefully renders each detail of his sculptures, down to every last sugar crystal. His work begins first with eating and studying a new food, to familiarize himself with the subject. This is followed by a long process of sculpting, sanding, and painting. “I have an innate reverence for the things we eat,” says the artist. “Food was, and continues to be, a strong passion of mine. I get excited learning how different foods activate passions and emotions in people and the profound connection food has to an individual’s memories and personal history.”
