“The Wave,” Very Rare Art Deco Table Lamp by Gregory for Cowan w/ Original Shade

$7,800.00

Extraordinary in its rarity and fine design, this green and gold glazed table lamp by sculptor Waylande Gregory was made by the famed Cowan pottery works near Cleveland and includes its original, hand crafted parchment shade in soft pumpkin and gold. The lamp base captures the movement of water and wave in stylized curves to each sdie, and the shade includes painted Art Deco wave and geometric motifs in paint and gold foil. Gregory was one of America’s greatest sculptors and ceramicists before and after World War II. He was prodigious and indefatigable, producing a wide range of sculptures and wares in ceramic during his years working with Lorado Taft and later for WPA projects, institutions and public parks. A major retrospective of Gregory’s work was recently organized by the University of Richmond’s Museums. Cowan operated from 1912 to 1931, and brought together some of the finest sculptors and ceramic artists of the day, including Arthur Eugene Baggs, Edris Eckhardt, Paul Manship, Viktor Schreckengost, Elsa Vick Shaw, Walter Sinz, Edward Winter, and Thelma Frazier Winter. The lamp base is marked on the bottom. (Dimensions include shade and finial; lamp base itself is 8 inches high by 4.25 inches wide.)
